SPORTS AND MORE IN THE COMMUNITY HALL (AND ELSEWHERE)
Scroll down to read about all the regular sporting and other activities organised within the Community - and, while you're a guest on the Aughrus Peninsula, why not consider coming along to participate? That way, you can really feel like a member of the community - not a temporary outsider. You'll find a great welcome, and you'll meet the people who live here full-time!
There's a very active community on the Aughrus Peninsula and, in addition to the events described elsewhere on this site (e.g. the Festival of The Sea, listed on our "Events during 2012" page), these are organised by people from the community itself.
The Cleggan-Claddaghduff Community Council is the governing body for Community assets, amenities and many of the activities and events. It's a busy group of people, who meet regularly, under the Chairmanship this year of Jack Walsh, in the small Community Hall in Cleggan. This website has the full support and encouragement of the Council.
The larger Community Hall, rebuilt in recent years largely through the fund-raising efforts of the community and the Council (and with some very welcome funding from public bodies), is a tremendous asset for the community, and is much used by all. You'll find it on the right-hand side of the road when you drive towards the end of the peninsula passing Sweeneys (Claddaghduff) on your right - just a couple of hundred meters past Sweeneys.
BELOW IS A BRIEF LISTING OF THE WEEKLY ACTIVITIES YOU'LL FIND TAKING PLACE, MOSTLY WITHIN THE CLADDAGHDUFF COMMUNITY HALL.

FOR ANYONE - LOCAL OR VISITORS - WISHING TO USE THE HALL FOR, SAY, AN HOUR AT A TIME, FOR BADMINTON OR SOME OTHER PURPOSE, THIS CAN EASILY BE ARRANGED! JUST PHONE LAURENCE CONNEELY, AT 086-853-0339, AND HE WILL BE DELIGHTED TO OBLIGE.
And there's more! The Hall is home to many one-off events during the year - for example, to exhibitions, sales of work, craft fairs....even Santa never misses out the Claddaghduff Commnunity Hall for a Christmas visit (with presents and of course a party for all the kids, not to mention the adults!) - just before he starts the serious globe-trotting Christmas Eve work. Here on the Aughrus Peninsula, he leaves the sleigh and Rudolf behind, and arrives in style, drawn in a pony and trap!
And the Hall is home to various crafts, too, such as knitting courses and sewing classes, drama groups, aerobics, dance, school concerts, art, and more. And the Hall is available for hiring out for private functions and events, too. Why not enquire locally if there's something of interest to you that isn't covered on this page?
The Peninsula is rightly proud of its achievements when it comes to showing off its strengths in TUG O' WAR (WOMEN'S AND MEN'S TEAMS)! The teams practise during the winter months in the Community Hall; and when the weather improves, it's off to Sellerna for the serious work (if you've visited Sellerna beach and wondered what those two poles, with ropes and barrels filled with concrete, are for - now you know! Tug o' War training!).
Our teams have competed with the very best from all over Ireland and indeed across Europe, and have conquered! Fear the strength of the Aughrus women and men....
